Personally, I think it only makes sense as a Christian to oppose "Choose Civility." Sure, there's the angle she takes against judgmentalism, but there's another that I prefer. It's the namby-pamby ethic of our modern age, which resists at all costs the basic human impulse to distinguish right from wrong. "Choose Civility" is just such a sad aspiration! Can't we aim for anything higher than that?
If we disagree on fundamental convictions, I want to respond to your view, your lifestyle, your words as I see them. I want to dump over tables or cuff you for heresy, if that's what it takes. And I want you to be able to do the same to me. And whether I call you my friend or my enemy, I want to lie down and die to save your life. Because love that transcends the natural hostilities of life is so much more powerful than being nice.
It's like a campaign to put the whole county on lithium . . .
That's a hell of a way to put it. I think you have to take one of two angles - apathy/indifference, or intensity for the idea of absolute good. Me, I choose indifference because I don't really care what other people do, if their souls are saved, etc. But, I much rather respect someone who has true opinions rather than just trying to be accommodative.
The Howard County Library wants you to choose civility. But, only if you live in Howard County. And if you don't live in Howard County and are not civil, then you stay the hell out. Why be civil and exclusive when you can be hostile and inclusive? It is much better to flip off anyone than to only be nice to a few rich WASPs.
